Director, Portfolio Construction

IMCO is looking for a highly motivated Director, Portfolio Construction to join our team!

Director, Portfolio Construction is responsible for developing and communicating strategic asset allocation advice to a range of IMCO’s clients and will directly impact IMCO’s portfolio advice to clients, and through this client asset allocation decisions, through asset-liability modeling and other analysis. Reporting to the Vice President, Portfolio Construction, the Director is a forward-thinking leader with a deep understanding of both assets and liabilities as well as experience with conducting asset liability studies and providing strategic asset allocation advice to a wide range of audiences. The Director will also provide leadership and help to continue build out of a high performing client focused portfolio construction team.

As a Member of Our Team, You Will be Responsible For:

  • Providing oversight, management, and direction to the portfolio construction team's work related to strategic asset allocation, asset and asset-liability modelling, economic and financial market analysis.

  • Providing oversight, management, and direction for research into long-term investment issues relevant to client strategic asset allocation decisions, including improving understanding of interactions between client assets and liabilities in various economic scenarios.

  • Oversight of the development of IMCO’s long-term capital market assumptions, including identifying potential areas for improvement and oversight of resulting updates and refinements to the methodology used to forecast expected long-term expected returns and risks.

  • Communicating results of the analysis, including IMCO’s strategic asset allocation recommendations to clients, including producing clear and concise reports, recommendations, presentations, and other materials that support the analysis and asset allocation decisions for clients, prospective clients, and a variety of internal and external audiences.

  • Proactively identifying opportunities to make improvements to clients’ strategic asset allocations and IMCO’s tools and processes, consistent with the team and IMCO’s corporate goals and the client investment objective and risk tolerances.

  • Leading and mentoring a high performing team.

  • Development, maintenance, operation, and oversight of the technical tools used for asset liability modelling and portfolio construction.

  • Gathering, examining and analysing complex data.

  • Development and documentation of standards and processes relevant to the design, testing, validation, calibration and usage of all models within the portfolio construction team.

  • Establishing, maintaining and enhancing working relationships with key internal stakeholders (e.g. Client Service Team, Front Office, Risk, etc.) and external stakeholders (i.e. IMCO clients and prospects).

  • Performing other duties as assigned.

What do you need to succeed?

  • CFA or MBA coupled with a minimum of 10 years of investment management experience.

  • Experience within the pension investment industry would be considered an asset.

  • At least five years of direct experience in portfolio construction, asset allocation, and asset liability modelling is a requirement for the position, along with ability and experience with communicating communicate complex subject matter in a fashion that is concise and tailored to diverse audiences.

  • Deep understanding of pension plans as well as funding and regulatory environment in which they operate.

  • Passion for learning, understanding challenges facing investors (and in particular our clients), and finding solutions to those challenges.

  • Role model work ethic, using the highest level of integrity under all conditions.

  • Ability to work independently in a complex and dynamic environment.
