Actuarial Lead

Job Description

  • The Actuarial Lead supports various actuarial functions that include reserving/valuation, financial reporting, capital management & forecasting and pricing. They provide moderate to highly complex analysis and techniques which support Assurant operations in achieving its goals related to revenue and profitability targets. The Actuarial Lead also demonstrates pre-supervisory skillsets related to project organization, task delegation and training.

     

    This role is expected to also participate in the department’s exam and rotational program, which provides the opportunity to gain experience in numerous areas of the Actuarial organization while also gaining understanding of all products in Assurant’s product suite. The Actuarial Lead will report to the Manager of Actuarial.

     

    Primary Responsibilities

    • Provides actuarial services related to the reserving and financial reporting of Life and A&H products on a Canadian and US GAAP basis.

    • Maintains and updates AXIS models for use in Canadian GAAP, US GAAP/Stat reporting.

    • Provides support to the Appointed Actuary as it relates to Canadian actuarial practice including but not limited to: Financial Condition Testing (FCT), Canadian Asset Liability Method (CALM) reserving, Life Insurance Margin Adequacy Test (LIMAT) and implementation/future reporting under IFRS-17.

    • Creates new memorandums, reports, and other business communications with logical structure and minimal assistance.

    • Develops and implements solutions to translate financial projections into business metrics; is aware of area productivity, processes, & business profitability.

    • Understands various data sources and gathers data appropriately; prepares projections and applies detail from management recommendations and industry trends which may affect analysis.

    • Probes to understand report requesters' needs, appropriately adjusts methodologies as necessary using a wide range of techniques; suggests alternative approaches.

    • Interacts with and responds to various internal areas (finance, accounting, regulatory, IT, etc.) and requests regarding business processes, gaps, strategy & improvements.

    • Provides suggestions that help develop methods to improve system & data quality and recommends measures for revisions.

    • Participates in cross-training and knowledge sharing within team/department/internal, related areas; leads internal team projects and can delegate standard tasks; periodically completes peer review. Provides manager with feedback as needed.

    • Manages multiple projects with varying deadlines and complexity.

    • Actively manages self-development. Takes actuarial exams in pursuit of professional designation.

     

    Basic Qualifications

    • Bachelor’s degree in Actuarial Science, Mathematics, Statistics, or related field.

    • Minimum of 4 years of progressive responsibilities and related experience in an actuarial role.

    • Progressing towards Fellowship in an Actuarial Society (CAS/SOA/CIA/IFoA).

    • Advanced proficiency with Moody's GGY AXIS.

    • Has specialized level of understanding actuarial concepts, insurance products and industry knowledge.

    • Advanced proficiency in MS Office Applications including Excel, PowerPoint, Word, Outlook.

    • Advanced to Expert proficiency in various data repository platforms/languages (SAS/SQL/etc.).

     

    Preferred Qualifications

    • Minimum of 6 years of progressive responsibilities and related experience in an actuarial role.

    • Associate of and progressing towards Fellowship in an Actuarial Society (CAS/SOA/CIA/IFoA).

    • Expert proficiency with Moody's GGY AXIS.

    • Seeks out and learns additional software tools that can help bring alternative and creative ways of showcasing data analysis. Implements and/or leads teams to improve data quality and systems efficiency, producing deeper analysis and eliminating data issues.

    • Exhibits advanced skills in managing long and complex projects through to completion. 

    • Begins to establish a leadership role in situations with conflict.

    • Identifies core business relationships. Assesses personal growth interests and seeks ways to learn from leaders within the organization. Proactively solicits opportunities to enhance connections.

     

    This individual will work remotely temporarily due to COVID-19.
