Vice President & Chief Actuary

Our client, Manitoba Public Insurance (MPI), is seeking its next Vice President & Chief Actuary. Reporting to the President and Chief Executive Officer and as a member of the executive team, the Chief Actuary will provide strategic leadership to the pricing and portfolio management, forecasting and reinsurance, investment, commercial lines, and enterprise risk management functions ensuring they support high quality, effective, accessible delivery of automobile insurance and driver and vehicle licensing services to Manitobans. The Vice President & Chief Actuary will guide the development and implementation of a long-term strategy to ensure the successful execution of corporate strategic initiatives. The Vice President & Chief Actuary will establish a high-performance organization with dedicated, skilled, engaged and customer-focused team members, efficient service delivery, and effective governance and risk practices.   

The Vice President & Chief Actuary is a key contributor to the overall success of the MPI organization and requires strong leadership skills and the ability to develop and maintain an environment aligned with the organization’s key values. Candidates must meet the education and experience requirements and be able to demonstrate several leadership and technical competencies.

The successful candidate for this position will be a Fellow of the Canadian Institute of Actuaries with a minimum of 15 years senior experience in the insurance industry including strategic involvement in rate setting, reserving, and risk management. In-depth knowledge of actuarial principles and associated tools and methodology is necessary. Proven experience effectively and critically assessing different product and coverage scenarios and determining creative solutions that meet customers’ needs while demonstrating clear understanding of root cause, impacts and consequences of decisions on both customers and the corporation is required. This experience will be enhanced by strong research and analysis capabilities along with the ability to synthesize complex data and communicate ideas and information in a concise and straight forward manner.    

The ideal candidate will have superior negotiation skills along with excellent interpersonal skills and proven success in public speaking and formal presentations. Strong organizational skills along with the ability to plan and manage multiple complex projects and tasks simultaneously will contribute to success in this role. In-depth knowledge of applicable legislation, regulations, policies, procedures and practices is an asset. The Vice President & Chief Actuary must be capable of positively influencing executive management and the Board of Directors and of effectively negotiating with vendors and stakeholders.
