The Team Lead, Actuarial Services plays a vital role in CAAT's Service Delivery team and growth strategy. They oversee, guide, and mentor the Actuarial Services team to align with CAAT's strategic goals. Collaborating closely with the Strategic Risk Management team, they analyze trends and plan projections while serving as an expert on high-risk pension calculations. They assist the Senior Manager in leading special projects to support the Plan's growth and diverse product offerings. This role involves collaborating with various teams within CAAT, providing compliance recommendations, analyzing new plan provisions, and updating tools for system enhancements. The Actuarial Services team, situated within the operational arm of the organization, supports Service Delivery in delivering exceptional service to Plan members and employers.
We are looking for someone with:
- A University degree (e.g., majoring in actuarial science, statistics, or mathematics), college diploma, or equivalent combination of training, education, and experience.
- Fellow of the Canadian Institute of Actuaries (FCIA)/Fellow of the Society of Actuaries (FSA) designation or equivalent education/experience.
- Minimum 10+ years of experience in the pension industry, with pension administration experience considered an asset, and at least 1 year of experience supervising and leading a team.
- Demonstrated experience working with defined benefit pension plan designs, actuarial Standards of Practice, Pension Benefits Act, regulations, and compliance requirements.
- Experience in overseeing and coordinating projects combined with ability to manage team members.
- A track record of training and developing team members in pension calculation methodologies and best practices.
- Experience working with valuation and projection software such as ProVal is considered a strong asset.
The successful candidate will demonstrate:
- Exceptional communication skills to convey complex actuarial concepts to non-technical stakeholders.
- Strong analytical and problem-solving abilities to tackle unique actuarial challenges and offer strategic solutions.
- An agile mindset, capable of proactively adapting to change and providing innovative solutions.
Once here you will:
- Oversee special projects and support strategic initiatives by assessing risks and providing data-driven recommendations to facilitate decision-making.
- Lead demographic and other trend analysis, experience studies, valuations and projections, sensitivity analysis, and plan design reviews.
- Provide expertise and oversight in the calculation of complex pension plan entitlements, including termination, retirement, death, family law valuations.
- Provide leadership and project management for large-scale initiatives such as plan amendments and multi-jurisdictional administration.
- Collaborate with Plan staff from various teams to address stakeholder inquiries and contribute to the development of business requirements for system changes.
- Guide team members on providing cross-departmental support for the internal set-up and transitioning of merging plans.
- Demonstrate creativity and innovation with problem solving and identify opportunities for process improvements.
- Contributing to the development and documentation of best practices while participating in the training and mentoring of team members.
- Stay current on actuarial best practices and relevant pension legislation, sharing knowledge with team members.
- Perform other duties as assigned to support the Actuarial Services strategy.
